I am most curious about how liturgy and ritual show up in the wild and more-than-human world. Even within Hebrew and Christian scripture, the natural world is recognized as participating in the sacred. Jesus observes that if human voices were silent, “the very stones would cry out” (Luke 19:40), imagining creation as a witness to the Holy presence. The prophet Isaiah envisions mountains breaking into song and trees clapping their hands (Isaiah 55:12), and Psalm 98:8 describes rivers clapping and mountains singing for joy. The psalmist also notes the cosmic rhythms of creation: “You have made the moon to mark the seasons” (Psalm 104:19), connecting the cycles of heaven to the cycles of the earth and our lives.
These passages invite us to imagine a universe alive with praise, where rivers, mountains, and celestial bodies are in joyful communion, and where the moon itself marks the sacred rhythm of time.
Through my work as an eco-theologian and spiritual ecologist, I have been drawn to Celtic spirituality and other forms of eco-spirituality that help reconnect to this cosmic and wild liturgy. I have longed to engage in rituals that mirror the rhythms of the seasons and to open the first book of creation—the natural world itself—knowing that ancient wisdom, if truly sought, lives here too.
For the past 12 years, I have celebrated the full moons with my young family. These moon-based spiritual practices have become sacramental: a time to attune to the wilder and sacred world, reflect on ways to live in deeper connection, and gather with a larger community of friends and family. During the pandemic, these full moon rituals became a lifeline, providing a sense of sacred connection when traditional gatherings were paused. My children discovered a version of wild church, wandering rivers, climbing mountains, and playing in silver fields illuminated by the moon. If this could be church, they were all in.
